Foreword
Natural/ Unnatural is a theme which allow questions to be raised rather than finding answers. What is the natural and what is the unnatural? Artists are always challenging limitations and attempt to break boundaries laid by their predecessors. Human have been fascinated with abstract shapes and surreal landscapes, exploring the unknown and the unnatural. We are also trying to understand our own existence through attempts to capture the human form. The human form is complicated yet simple, allowing artists to make their own interpretations. We do not exist alone but among other people and other species. The theme Natural/ Unnatural is also about unity as we live in an environment where the unnatural thrive among the natural. How should we position ourselves in this world?
The year 2020 is filled with dramatic changes and we all had to adapt to the post-pandemic world. Art is an important way in which we can express our beliefs. The theme of the exhibition Natural/ Unnatural raises questions of what is the norm and attempts to break traditional values and standards. Recently, the Black Life Matters movement drew our attention to the mistreatment of ethnic minorities and the flaws in our justice systems. This exhibition also sheds light on social problems such as gender and the current situations in the world.
The artworks in this exhibition show great diversity in terms of the subjects and the artistic medium. From artworks attempting to capture the human form to surreal landscapes. The exhibition is divided into three sections: The Imaginary Universe, The Senses and The Interactions. The exhibition contain not only visual art, but also soundscapes and poetry, hoping to spark your thoughts. The soundscapes can be enjoyed as individual artworks or you can roam around the section listening to the soundscape.
